Heidi Scheer - 1st Runner-Up
I am a strong believer that autism is treatable and recovery is possible. When my son was three, he was diagnosed with autism. After countless therapies and protocols, at the age of eleven he no longer qualified for the clinical diagnosis of autism. Today, he laughs and learns alongside his typical peers. He is our family's greatest teaching example of faith, perseverance and courage. "For with God nothing shall be impossible." Luke 1:37
My husband and I met in an airport hallway. When he approached me, I thought he was going to ask me out, instead he lectured me on why I shouldn’t wear fur. He persuaded me to return the coat, and I persuaded him to take me to dinner. 20 years later, we are a happy family of five and the only one wearing fur is our dog!
In 2008, I co-wrote a film (seen in over 16 countries) documenting my son’s journey through the autism spectrum. As a result, I have co-chaired two international autism conferences, received proclamations from the Governors of New Jersey and Michigan, volunteered at the Hong Kong Autism Partnership school, and shared testimony with the National Institute of Health’s Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee in efforts to secure greater funding for autism research in the United States.
Over the past twenty years, I have performed as an illusionist’s assistant with my husband. Together, we have educated tens of thousands of children throughout the midwest on subjects such as bully proofing, conflict resolution and diversity. Our feature article, “Including Children with Special Needs in Live Shows,” has been published in three international magazines, as well as presented in a live lecture in Tel Aviv, Israel, for entertainers from all over the world.
